Deborah Freedman has always remembered her regular childhood visits to the library, where she and her brother and sister loved to borrow and read the same books over and over. A generation later, she still remembered words and images from those old favorites and couldn’t wait to find them again, to read over and over with her own children; that is when she began to tinker with writing and illustrating picture books.

Deborah was also inspired when her children began to draw, when they progressed beyond scribbling to draw recognizable and fantastic beings with endearing back-stories. She began then to play with their pictures by photocopying them and doodling around them, developing the ideas that eventually matured, many years later, into her first picture book, SCRIBBLE.

Interested and involved in the arts for as long as she can remember, Deborah majored in art history in college at Yale and went on to earn a masters degree in architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. In 2003, her portfolio and Scribble each received Connecticut Tassy Walden Awards for New Voices in Children’s Literature. When she isn’t working on picture books, she loves spending time with her family at home in Connecticut, and hanging around at the library!
