LESSON IDEAS: BLUE CHICKEN

  • WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
What happens after Blue Chicken ends? Write and illustrate the sequel!
  • PICTURE A POEM
Blue Chicken was inspired by William Carlos Williams's poem, The Red Wheelbarrow. Read this poem to children and then have them draw a picture of it. If they would like to turn this into a story, they might begin by looking at the picture and asking "What happens next?" or "WHAT IF... ?"
  • MAKE A SPLASH!
After reading Blue Chicken, children may have fun telling their own stories with paint –
while exploring color and the medium of watercolor.

LESSON IDEAS: SCRIBBLE

  • SCRIBBLE A STORY
In the story Scribble, a child's drawing comes to life. Have children begin their own stories with a simple scribble. Then ask them to add eyes, then ears, nose, limbs, etc., until the scribble becomes a character. Does their scribble have a name? If it could talk, what would it say? If it could come to life, what would it do?
