• My next book, By Mouse & Frog, will be published by Viking in April 2015!

  • I'm thrilled to share this recent announcement in Publishers Weekly: "Kendra Levin at Viking has acquired two picture books from Blue Chicken and The Story of Fish and Snail author-illustrator Deborah Freedman. In the first title, Shy, the eponymous protagonist is nearly too bashful to appear in his own book, let alone confront the object of his affection. Publication is scheduled for spring 2016, with a second, untitled book to follow in summer 2017. Stephen Barr at Writers House negotiated the deal for world rights."

  • The Children's Book Council features The Story of Fish & Snail in their Seasonal Showcase: Trailblazers, "titles about innovators, trendsetters and ground breakers."
  • Brittney Breakey interviews me on Author Turf. Read it, if you would like to know what one toy I'd like to throw repeatedly at a brick wall!
  • In another interview this month, I chat with Henry Herz, at Feed Your Head!.

  • Many, many thanks to my NESCBWI friends—old, new, and future—for the 2014 Crystal Kite award, for The Story of Fish & Snail. Being honored by my peers... I'm speechless!
  • Thanks so much to the librarians, teachers and students in Wyoming who nominated The Story of Fish & Snail for a 2014-2015 Wyoming Buckaroo Book Award!

  • I've been having lots of fun visiting schools this spring. THANK YOU teachers, for all you do to get your students excited about books. To see some of my collection of wonderful work by children, visit my Facebook author page.

  • Thanks so much to the teachers and media specialists across the country who read The Story of Fish & Snail for World Read Aloud Day!

  • The Story of Fish & Snail has been shortlisted for a Colorado Libraries for Early Literacy (CLEL) Bell Picture Book Award, which recognizes outstanding picture books that effectively promote the early literacy practices: read, write, sing, talk, and play.

  • Thanks to the members of the Nerdy Book Club for selecting The Story of Fish & Snail as one of their 10 Nerdy Award picturebook finalists!
  • Thanks to the blog Waking Brain Cells, for the lovely review of The Story of Fish & Snail.

  • Thanks to Design Mom and reviewer Carter Higgins for choosing The Story of Fish & Snail as book of the week.
  • You can see more photos and children's artwork on my Facebook page.

  • Inspired by the many wonderful teachers and librarians on Twitter who have "Be Brave" as a motto for their classrooms this year, I made this poster for downloading:

  • Snail and I celebrated the birth of our new book, with 20 rising first-graders at New Haven Reads!

  • The Story of Fish & Snail makes an appearance on the New York Times Book Review's "Bookshelf": "It's meta for beginners, and even if the surreality may float over young heads, they'll relate to the story of friends with differences. Freedman's paintings, brimming with raucous, three-dimensional splashes of color, bring to mind David Wiesner's Art & Max." — Pamela Paul

  • First reviews for The Story of Fish & Snail:

"Right from the title page, Freedman's latest makes a splash...
This marvelous metabook shines in both concept and beauty."

    Kirkus Reviews, starred review

"The theme of books as doorways into rich new adventures couldn’t be more vividly conveyed, and the resolution of the conflict between two sweet friends provides encouragement for other “snails” to try new things."
    Publishers Weekly

  • And Fish & Snail's first blog review is over at Librarian's Quest:
"There's sheer delight between the covers of The Story of Fish & Snail by @deborahfreedman. It's illustrative genius."

  • Wish I could show you more of the adorable kinders I met in Norwich, CT! 385+ went home with a signed copy of Blue Chicken — thanks to one creative librarian, the Otis Library, Norwich Public Schools, and an early childhood reading grant from Target.

  • Awards from kids are the BEST. Getting to visit the wonderful Community School of Naples, which voted BLUE CHICKEN best picture book of 2011? Even better.
