• I am interviewed by writer Faith Hough, in which we talk about telepathy, ice cream, and a few other things: read our chat here.

  • I'm thrilled that By Mouse & Frog has received a third starred review, this one from The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books: "The text, which neatly avoids committing to the gender of either of the friends, is almost entirely dialogue, and it’s a treat to read aloud... This is an endearing take on the complementary-friends story."
  • TIME for Kids chats with author Kate DiCamillo about "The Joy of Summer Reading" and she recommends a few books... including By Mouse & Frog!

  • "Freedman brings humor, energy and charm to her characters, making their predicament and their creative efforts feel real. And while young children can learn skills of collaboration and teamwork, parents may find themselves wanting to bring a copy to work where certain co-workers might see it. After all, just like Frog, we sometimes all need a little reminder to be better listeners." — from a review at BookPage.
  • I had tons of fun celebrating my recent "book birthday" by reading By Mouse & Frog to classrooms across the U.S. via Skype. Teacher-librarian Sherry Gick reports here, at her blog The Library Fanatic, about one of those visits.
  • It was unbelievably wonderful to wake up on 4/12 to this By Mouse & Frog Trifecta, by teacher Colby Sharp at his blog Sharpread, and teacher-librarian John Schumacher at Watch. Connect. Read., in concert with my guestpost at The Nerdy Book Club.

  • "Every single thing about By Mouse & Frog, the text and pictures, is masterfully done by Deborah Freedman."— From a lovely review of By Mouse & Frog, posted on the blog Librarian's Quest.
  • "It’s a balanced look at creativity and collaboration that is welcoming and inclusive." Thank you to the blog Waking Brain Cells, for this thoughtful review.

  • Thank you, Kirkus Reviews, for this wonderful, starred review of By Mouse & FrogAn elegant, exuberant portrayal of stylistic differences and child-writer passion.
  • And another huge, starry thanks, to Publishers Weekly! Wearing its metafictionality lightly and told largely through dialogue that begs for performance, Freedman’s story speaks to power of creative passion and the rewards of playing well with others.
  • AND, thanks to Minh Le, for The Best Is Yet to Come: An Early 2015 Picture Book Preview, at Huffington PostI've said before that we are in the midst of a golden age for children's literature. Well, if the early returns are any indication, 2015 might very well be a new high water mark in the modern era of picture books. There are a staggering number of great titles this year...

  • I am busy at work on my next book, SHY, which will be published by Viking in 2016.

  • Happy Holidays to all!

  • I'm thrilled to share this recent announcement in Publishers Weekly: "Kendra Levin at Viking has acquired two picture books from Blue Chicken and The Story of Fish and Snail author-illustrator Deborah Freedman. In the first title, Shy, the eponymous protagonist is nearly too bashful to appear in his own book, let alone confront the object of his affection. Publication is scheduled for spring 2016, with a second, untitled book to follow in summer 2017. Stephen Barr at Writers House negotiated the deal for world rights."

  • The Children's Book Council features The Story of Fish & Snail in their Seasonal Showcase: Trailblazers, "titles about innovators, trendsetters and ground breakers."
  • Brittney Breakey interviews me on Author Turf. Read it, if you would like to know what one toy I'd like to throw repeatedly at a brick wall!
  • In another interview this month, I chat with Henry Herz, at Feed Your Head!.

  • Many, many thanks to my NESCBWI friends—old, new, and future—for the 2014 Crystal Kite award, for The Story of Fish & Snail. Being honored by my peers... I'm speechless!
  • Thanks so much to the librarians, teachers and students in Wyoming who nominated The Story of Fish & Snail for a 2014-2015 Wyoming Buckaroo Book Award!

  • I've been having lots of fun visiting schools this spring. THANK YOU teachers, for all you do to get your students excited about books. To see some of my collection of wonderful work by children, visit my Facebook author page.

  • Thanks so much to the teachers and media specialists across the country who read The Story of Fish & Snail for World Read Aloud Day!

  • The Story of Fish & Snail has been shortlisted for a Colorado Libraries for Early Literacy (CLEL) Bell Picture Book Award, which recognizes outstanding picture books that effectively promote the early literacy practices: read, write, sing, talk, and play.
