OLD FAVORITES

I have tried to think about what my favorite picture books are – a difficult thing to do! There are many, many artists I admire who are not on the following list. These books have something else – they somehow, for me, perfectly capture the way children think and respond to the world…

Here is a short list of the picture books that I remember from my childhood:

Virginia Lee Burton, The Little House and Mike Mulligan and His Steamshovel
Roger Bradfield, Giants Come in Different Sizes (out-of-print)
Don Freeman, Dandelion
Mary Ann Hoberman and Norman Hoberman, What Jim Knew (out-of-print), and others
Ezra Jack Keats, The Snowy Day
Ruth Krauss and Maurice Sendak, A Hole is To Dig; also by Maurice Sendak, The Nutshell Library
Golden MacDonald and Leonard Weisgard, The Little Island
H. A. Rey and Margret Ray, Curious George
Hildegarde Swift and Lynd Ward, The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge
Eve Titus, Anatole and Anatole and the Cat
Gene Zion and Margaret Bloy Graham, Harry the Dirty Dog, and others

And a few of the picture books that I enjoyed with my children or since – many of these are classics that you may know about already, but I think just have to be listed anyway; perhaps some are less obvious than others.
